Computer Design Benefits
Graham Marsh Golf Design use the latest computer aided drafting and engineering software to accurately document and record each designed Golf Course.

We are committed to researching and developing technical solutions that increase efficiencies and provide tangible benefits to each Golf Course Development and Client.
This has seen the development of specialist design technology that accurately documents and quantifies the finished Golf Course.
The technology offers each client strict control over the construction costs and time management without sacrifice to quality.
Improvements in CAD systems have permitted us to accurately document the Golf Course terrain models. These digital land forms can be accurately quantified and constructed with strict control on earthwork efficiencies.
We have taken this concept beyond industry standards and applied specialist resources to refine the information required for the documentation and construction of a Golf Course.
Graham Marsh Golf Design utilise CAD Systems and Engineering software to digitally construct a model Golf Course onto the existing terrain prior to construction. The benefits of this to the Client are:
- Digital representation of Architects Vision
- Design Accountability
- Accurate construction documentation
- Manages earthworks and works areas
- Accurate material quantities
- Identifies areas of cut and fill earthworks
- 3D imagery and real time visuals
- GPS and ATS Compatible
- Controlled practices
What is CAD - Computer Aided Drafting
Computer-aided design (CAD) is the use of computer technology to aid in the design to a specific technical field.
The first graphic system was used in mid 1950 by the US Air Force's SAGE (Semi Automatic Ground Environment) air defence system. It was developed at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Lincoln Laboratory.
CAD systems and software has developed rapidly since 1957 of increasingly sophisticated and accessible systems. By the 1980s, different applications were developed for personal computers.
By the late 20th century, CAD, a sophisticated software package now containing advanced graphics and drawing features is commonly used by engineers, architects, and designers for drawing and design applications.
Before the age of computers, drawings and blueprints were drafted by hand. CAD is more efficient because the software records lines as vectors based on mathematical equations.
The use of CAD and its features has greatly increased the end user's productivity.
GPS & ATS Construction Practices
The use of computers in today's world is increasing rapidly with the development of electronic components and computer systems directly assisting in everyday routines.

“Technology” as it is branded, is the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society and the environment.
Accordingly, it is a logical progression that Golf Course Design and Construction should develop in such a way that utilises this technology. Graham Marsh Golf Design has done just that and achieved instant success through utilizing the latest GPS Technology and Software available for Golf Course Design and Construction.
Through years of research and development, Graham Marsh Golf Design has refined the Design Detail and Documentation needed for GPS Equipment to efficiently construct and control Golf Course Projects.
The systems used are at the cutting edge of this technology and have taken Golf Course Design and Construction to a level which offers significant financial benefits to Golf Course Developers.
GPS Technology
GPS or Global Positioning System is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 to 32 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defence.
GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.
How it works
GPS satellites circle the earth twice a day in a very precise orbit and transmit signal information to earth. GPS receivers take this information and use triangulation to calculate the user's exact location.
Essentially, the GPS receiver compares the time a signal was transmitted by a satellite with the time it was received. The time difference tells the GPS receiver how far away the satellite is.
With distance measurements from a few more satellites, the receiver can determine the user's position and display it on the unit's electronic map.
How Graham Marsh Golf Design Utilizes GPS Technology
Upon completion of detailed design, Graham Marsh Golf Design uploads digital terrain surfaces into computer equipment that control the hydraulics of earthmoving machinery. This allows the Golf Course Design to be produced automatically.
At no time do any of the machines move dirt that they shouldn't, therefore producing exactly the Architect's design intent whilst dynamically recording all as constructed information. At any given time the Client can quantify materials and analyse budgets.
Advantages of GPS Technology
- Detailed and accurate quantities
- As-constructed information recorded dynamically
- Limits material disturbance and distribution
- Improves time efficiencies
- Reduces supervision and labour costs
- Significantly reduces variations
- Controls machinery operations
- Significant Cost benefits

Suzhou Taihu International Golf Course
The Suzhou Taihu International Golf Club straddles the line between the ancient and contemporary, between Suzhou’s Jiangdun Mountain and the vast waters of Lake Taihu and between a reverence for ancient culture and for the game of Golf. Where once Sun-Tzu commanded the soldiers of Wu, you can now command the Fairway, and with luck dominate 18 holes of Taihu International’s world-class golf course. The course is designed by Graham Marsh and the clubhouse each conform to the gentle symmetry of the land and the water, leaving you with a sense that you’ve truly left your frustrations behind.
